The Gojira Movie
The movie is ahead of its time since there are three plots in the movie. Most Sci-fi movies in 1954 had only one plot, that of the monster. In the Gojira movie, the primary plot is the star Godzilla with his destructive episodes, the second plot is the courtship of Emiko by Ogata and his efforts to ask Emiko’s father, Professor Yamane, for her hand in marriage. However, Professor Yamane has opposing views about Godzilla from Ogata, which complicates the father’s blessing for the marriage. The third plot is Dr. Serizawa’s secret scientific research that only the friend Emiko was trusted to know. As the movie unfolds, Godzilla, a legendary folklore monster, emerges from the Sea of Japan, infused with the power of Strontium 90, a bi-product from atomic research. The radioactivity in Godzilla makes him grow to 50 meters tall with modified features from the Jurassic period taking on the upright posture and the strong hind leg features of Tyrannosaurs Rex and the bony plates features on the back like Stegosaurus.
The people in the village gather to perform an exorcism to get rid of Godzilla for fear that Godzilla would eat all of human kind. In the old days, from folklore legion, a girl child was given to Godzilla as sacrifice to appease Godzilla, but a sacrifice will not help this time. Godzilla emerges and destroys the giant electrified fence built as a defense against Godzilla. Godzilla exhales a very hot radioactive aerosol breath that melts the fence, and then he crumbles the fence with his massive weight and three toed feet. Then Godzilla enters the Tokyo districts from Ginza-Owari to Shinbashi and turns the entire area into a sea of flames. He steps on buildings as if they were made of balsa wood. Destroys the overhead rail system and crushes the cars with his jaws and feet. Meanwhile, Serizawa continues with his scientific research. Emiko reveals to Ogata the secret of Serizawa’s research called the ‘Oxygen Destroyer’ that can disintegrate all organisms in water by asphyxiation. While Godzilla continues his destructive episodes, Ogata and Emiko try to convince Serizawa to use his newly discovered ‘Oxygen Destroyer’ to eliminate Godzilla. He reluctantly agrees as long as his research is destroyed, and all quantities of the substance are used against Godzilla. Serizawa does not want world politicians to use his discovery as a weapon like the atomic bomb. In the final assault against Godzilla, all three plots come together. Serizawa and Ogata take the entire supply of the Oxygen Destroyer to Godzilla under the ocean. They descend in deep-sea diving suits with lead shoes. Emiko and her father remain on board the vessel anxiously awaiting word from under the sea on their success. Godzilla is spotted at the bottom and while Ogata is pulled up, Serizawa activates the Oxygen Destroyer, which begins the disintegration of Godzilla and all organisms near by. Serizawa decides to destroy his knowledge by martyring himself, communicates to the ship above that he wants Ogata and Emiko to live happily ever after together. Emiko’s father hears all of this and passively accepts. End of Godzilla, only to rise again stronger and invincible. End of Story.
